Leave Rey Alone

Rey is coming back to Star Wars. There’s been a lot of backlash, and a lot of hate about it and I’m kind of over it. As the prequel movies were coming out, I remember that there was a lot of hate, especially around Jar Jar Binks, and how Lucas depicted in Anakin Skywalker as a young boy. It went on and on and on, and now one of the biggest, baddest things that have happened lately is Ahmed Best returning as a Jedi in the Mandalorian in the scene to rescue the baby Yoda. Now they cheer him and they’re happy for his return because the truth is that we all love Star Wars, all of us were still watching we’re still consuming the TV shows are still engaged in the story, and we all love this stuff. So I don’t want to see any bad talking Rey.
She’s not the most exciting character that Star Wars has ever had. But she’s not terrible. I think there are tons of stories that she could still engage in. I remember after the Return of the Jedi came out, we all wanted to know what the further adventures of Luke and Han and Leia were, despite the Ewoks, who got their share of jeering. We got some of that in the comic books, and later we got some of that in the legends books, and now of course there are more comic books and stories, but back then we got nothing.
I think it’s good to hear that we’ve got more stories coming out with Rey. I think that there’s a big mystery about her that we have yet to explore I think she’s got internal struggles as she sets up a new Jedi order that we should all take part in and I have an interest in watching. I think that there is a great possibility that she has accepted some of or all of the Emperor’s essence into her body. I mean, instead of like Luke refusing to kill him, she doubled down and took two light sabers to block and let him have it. I mean that’s what he wanted. He wanted to be struck down, and since she’s related to him, here she is with part of his essence in there. I mean think about it. There she is at the end of her trilogy, all alone on Tattooine, there to bury Luke and Leia’s light sabers, and she’s got her brand-new yellow one. Something we haven’t seen in live-action yet. And that’s always something that’s been kind of a point of contention with me because I remember the original Luke Skywalker action figure that had a yellow lightsaber and now we finally have the yellow lightsaber on screen. I mean I know it showed up in the Clone Wars show, something to do with Temple guards, but now we’ve got a Jedi who is going to ostensibly be the master of the new Jedi order and here she’s got an off-color lightsaber. Which I think is great. It shows that she’s got some individuality, that she’s got some kind of separation from the norms or the expectations of you know the good guys are green and blue and the bad guys are always red and what’s she, well she’s yellow. Now we don’t know what to expect from her. I think that’s a good thing.
I like the idea that she may have the Emperor lurking around in there and that she’ll have some kind of internal struggles because now she’s got both the good and the bad side floating inside her. So there’s a lot of potential for stories is there.
Star Wars, Lucasfilm rather as a company seems to have had a lot of trouble recently getting movies off the ground since the Solo movie, which of course I think is stupid because everybody jumped all over that movie because they didn’t like the casting for Han Solo. I think it was perfect. I mean, you know he’s not a young Harrison Ford. Please, he’s kinda got the character down pretty well and I mean, Lando is perfect. How can you beat that? There is so much potential to have stories there besides we need the story of Han Solo dumping the shipment get in trouble with Jabba the Hutt, that has got to be the next story in that line, and I think we need to let Ron Howard or Bryce Dallas Howard tell that story, I think that would be fabulous to see. And yes I think Lando needs to be a part of the story somehow because he was such a star shining in that movie that it needs to be addressed I don’t know exactly how it works but it needs to work and needs to be he needs to be in there.
So the bottom line here is that the haters, need to lay off Rey. We need to let Lucasfilm develop a new series of movies for Star Wars and not tear them to pieces every single time. It’s been a long time since the prequels were out, but we now look at them as great movies. Sure, each one has its problems. There’s lots of corny stuff in there, but that’s Star Wars kids, it’s corny. There are stupid things. And when you have a character like Jar Jar Binks, for instance, what you have is a character who is Anakin Skywalker’s childhood best friend, and when you have a character like him, he’s essentially the fool. He plays that role beautifully. So I don’t want anybody to jump on Rey and I know they will, and I know I can’t do anything about it and I know that nobody is going to read this thing, my little rant about it but, let Lucasfilm develop something without tearing it apart. With such a critical fan community that, given the smallest detail we hear, we tear apart, it’s time to just enjoy it for a little while, to enjoy the next movie to show up like children again and just enjoy it. I don’t care what Lucasfilm puts out; I think it’s going to be great.
